Rodolphe Kreutzer’s 42 Etudes or Caprices, written for the violin at the Paris Conservatoire around 1796 and on every string player’s stand since: bowing, intonation, trills, double stops and the long singing line.

Each study is transposed and re-clefed into the instrument's range and engraved at a 7.5 mm staff with a printer's margins. A short study shares a page rather than leave half of one empty, and a long one opens on a spread: never a turn inside a study.
